The Dangers of Marijuana

Now that marijuana is becoming legalized in many states, the dangers of marijuana are being glossed over. Although it has been decriminalized so there are no longer stiff penalties for users, it does not negate the scientific research of what it does to brain functioning and development. Of particular concern is the effects of marijuana on the developing adolescent brain. The new cultivated strains of marijuana now have a threefold increase in the concentration of the active ingredient THC. It is not as mild as it was over 20-30 years ago. Over time there’s been a change in attitude about marijuana, which has created a false sense of security to the users.   The adolescent brain continues develop through the 20’s. Frequent marijuana use by teenagers is associated with changes in the parts of the brain  concerning  attention, memory, decision-making and motivation. Additionally, the use of marijuana for pregnant women continue to threaten the well-being of the fetus, particularly as marijuana has become more potent.

There is high value of the use of medicinal marijuana and also for not having lifetime criminal records for recreational users.  However, the best way to protect is through education to both adults and kids  regarding the effects of  frequent and long term marijuana use  and how it will ultimately effect their development, functioning and life.
